Online Bookkeeping Software

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013

It’s a common question ‘what is the best online bookkeeping software to use’?

Completely up to you. There’s plenty to choose from. Top 5 things to look for:

1. Price (obviously)… because if it’s not FREE – you’ll be paying an ongoing subscription (otherwise you’ll lose all your work) AND (not so obviously) even if it isn;t free… there’s always the possibility that that changes… and then you need to be prepared to either pay (or lose all your work)

2. Functionality … does it do what you need it to do? Some people like the email alerts, others want to be able to automatically send statements and add interest and things, and others want to use it as their office suite – to manage letters and contact details etc.,

3. Who will be using it – if you’re hoping to get a bookkeeper – make sure they’re familiar with the system. If you’re not – then just make sure you’re happy with it, and it’ll do what you want it to do.

4. Security – don’t take it for granted that your data will be safe. It probably will be, but read the small print… just like FaceBook and YouTube have started to make claims of ownership of the content YOU POST and create onto their sites, so software companies are doing the same. Plus, its the data backup servers that they use. You don’t want your data a) lost or b) hacked into. Identity theft is on the increase.

5. Reports – you want to make sure you can pull off / extract the information in a format that your accountant is happy to use, as this shoudl reduce your tax bill as you’re making the accountants job easier.
